Chapter Information » Chapter History
Beta Omega Chapter was organized on October 14, 1920, by Lorraine Richardson Green, who was the second President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., at the Paseo Branch Y.W.C.A in Kansas City, Missouri. The charter members were Gladys C. Anderson, Doris R. Novel, Judith A. Syms, Irma G. Fraser, Anne E. Jackson, and Founder Beulah E. Burke. The chapter was first known as Lambda Graduate Chapter. At the 1922 Boule in Kansas City, MO the name was changed to Beta Omega. Thus, Beta Omega became the second graduate chapter, a beacon of light midway across the continent, which showed the way for further growth of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. We are proud of those members of our chapter who have given their time and talents to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. on the International level and in the Mid-Western Region: Judith Syms served as International Assistant Secretary and 3rd Mid-Western Regional Director; Trussie Smothers served as International Corresponding Secretary; Lucile Bluford was International Director of Publicity, an international office that was abolished in the 1930's; Rosetta Nolan served as 2nd Vice President, the last graduate member to hold that position, and International Parliamentarian, as well as 7th Mid-Western Regional Director ; Dorothy Johnson served as Editor-in-Chief of the Ivy Leaf; Theresa Barker served as 5th Mid-Western Regional Director; Jewell Freeman Neal served as 17th Mid- Regional Director; Delorise Gines served as 19th Mid-Western Regional Director; Margaret Evans serve d as the Mid-Western Representative to the International Human Resources Committee and currently serves as International Regional Heritage Chairman- Mid-Western Region; Carla Fields served as the Mid-Western Region Representative to the International Undergrad/Grad Relations Committee; Tamara Sykes currently serves as the Mid-Western Region Representative to the International Membership Committee. Through the years, the chapter has worked to achieve the goal of being "supreme in service to all mankind." Beta Omega's community service projects, support of the arts, Debutante Ball, aide to the homeless, college scholarships and other endeavors serve to validate the vision, dedication and integrity of our founders. As our chapter celebrates its 90th anniversary, we continue to uphold the ideals and goals of our founders and charter members. Our membership has grown from the original 5 members to over 150 active members dedicated to the success of the International Programs of the sorority. We Strive and We Do!!
